*Our unique “per calendar day” “No Penalty for late returns” fee structure.
When we opened our little hostel in 1997 we charged normal fees just like every other canoe “livery” in the country. These were:
We quickly discovered that with the “Travel Time” to the Flamingo Ranger Station to pull your permit, the travel time to any trail head, time to paddle from your last nights campsite to your trail head & the drive time back to the hostel, Made a “Normal Rate Structure” with penalties for late returns just plain dishonest.
An example of a 24 hour fee structure would be; If you picked up your canoe from us at 8:00am and your last night was at Pearl Bay, to get back to us by 8:00am on your return day would mean breaking camp at 3:00am!
We quickly learned that no one could enjoy a paddle and get back to us without being late. If we kept the normal fee structure we would know you Will Be Late! That is just wrong to know it and keep the normal rate structure and get rich in late fees! (Well not rich but you get the picture).
So we got rid of time limits and set our fees to what we feel is an honest & affordable rate that actually comes out to below Flamingo’s rates, the only other canoe rental option! Since you have the canoe on your car, you can enjoy any of the parks trails at anytime.
No worries when you go to pull your back country permit and have to start your trip at any place other than Flamingo.
For day paddles at 9 mile pond you don’t have to drive back and forth from the flamingo marina and again no clock is ticking
If 9 mile pond seems to crowded there are many other great day paddles if you have your “own” canoe.
The last and most important reason is “Enjoying YOUR TIME in the Park”. When you are driving out of the park and Bigfoot is on the side of the road posing for pictures you can take all the time in the world to capture these rare images with no penalty for your late canoe return! (We haven’t seen any pics of Bigfoot but we do here great stories like: “We saw a panther!” “We saw a bear?! Are there really bears in the park?” “We saw a python, a rattlesnake, an alligator right in the road.”)
Hostel Pro’s – Take your canoe anywhere- no clock ticking.
Hostel Con’s – You have to put the canoe on your car.
Flamingo Pro’s – You don’t have to and can’t put the canoe on your car.
Flamingo Con’s – limited canoe trail options and strict time limits.
