HOMESTEAD, Florida: On Saturday, March 09, 2013, Everglades National Park will host a volunteer event at the park’s historic Nike Missile Site, one of the Nation’s best preserved sites from the Cold War Era. Join park staff to help restore the Nike Missile Site. The Nike Missile Site was built in 1964 and official military use was terminated in 1979. It is now listed on the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places.
Volunteer Project: Volunteers will remove brush and weeds from the fence line, launch sites, and berms surrounding the missile barns for the purpose of preservation and to continue the Park Service’s restoration. There will also be a chance for a few volunteers to clean the old equipment that we have on display inside the barn and sweep inside. Attending volunteers will also enjoy a tour of the Nike Missile Site if numbers allow. This is a great project for those of you who are looking for earning service learning hours or for those who just want to step back in time and experience the site and environment that soldiers shared during a critical time of our Nation’s history.
Volunteers will meet at 9:00am in the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center parking lot (see directions below). Volunteers will follow park staff through the entrance station in their personal vehicles and to the Nike site inside Everglades National Park. The normal entry fee won’t apply to volunteers who are accompanied by park staff. Park staff usually waits about 15 minutes for anybody who shows up a little late, but anybody later will unfortunately miss out as we don’t have the staff to make multiple trips, so PLEASE be on time.
Be prepared for hot and humid weather. Participants are required to wear long-sleeved shirts, sneakers, and long pants to protect against exposure to sun, biting insects, poisonwood, and ivy. Please bring a lunch, refillable water bottle, hat, and sunglasses. Storms are common this time of year so be equipped for rain. There is no set end time… however most work projects last from 3 – 5 hours, where work continues until 2:00pm at the latest. There is no bathroom on the Nike site, the closest facilities will require you to drive to them.
· Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian fill out the approval section of the Volunteer Agreement before volunteering.
· This volunteer activity is not handicap accessible. If interested in volunteering for handicap accessible projects, please contact the Volunteer Office at 305-242-7752.
To volunteer, you do not need to respond to this email, just show up! If you are interested in getting community service or service learning hours for this event, please bring along any paperwork that needs signing. Participating volunteers will receive a free entry pass, enabling each volunteer to visit the Everglades for free again and share this unique National Park with their family and friends. All are invited. To volunteer, all you need to do is show up on time with proper clothing and a smile.
